Keeping Fluffy Healthy
February 15, 2023

Cats are pretty hardy little pets, and are generally quite easy keepers. However, Fluffy isn’t quite as invincible as she thinks she is, and she definitely does not have nine lives. Just like any other animal, our feline companions need good care to thrive. A local Frederick, MD vet offers some advice on this below.

Good Food

You don’t have to go broke buying cat food, but it is important to make sure that Fluffy is getting the nourishment she needs. Get into the habit of reading labels, and choose brands that utilize healthy, wholesome ingredients. (Tip: meat, fish, and/or poultry should be listed first and most frequently.)

Spay/Neuter Surgery

This is not only one of the best things you can do for Fluffy, it will also help support good animal welfare. Preventing unwanted litters is one of the most effective ways of battling pet overpopulation. Plus, your furball will be calmer and better behaved, and will also enjoy certain health benefits. (Bonus: no more spraying or yowling!)

Kitty Comforts

Provide little luxuries, like beds, boxes, kitty furniture, and, of course, catnip. Window seats and pet fountains will also please your feline overlord. Little things really do make a difference!

Clean Litterboxes

Changing litterboxes will never be fun, but it will definitely improve your furry buddy’s quality of life. We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter weekly.

Wellness Care

Many of our feline patients don’t see us as much as they should! Fluffy should come in at least once a year. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Safety

Kitties are highly prone to mischief. You’ll basically need to protect Fluffy from herself. Petproofing is one element of this. Remove or secure anything that your furry buddy shouldn’t be playing with, such as ribbons, wires, and cords; small or sharp objects; toxic chemicals and medications; plastic bags and ties; and, of course, unsafe foods. We also can’t overstate the importance of keeping cats indoors.

Love

Fluffy’s mental and emotional health also affect her well-being. Things like stress, boredom, and anxiety can quickly take a toll on cats. Keep your kitty content and purring by paying lots of attention to her. Conversations, cuddles, and playtime are all purrfect ways to make your furball  feel safe and loved.
