Summer is in full swing. This can be a rough time of year for our four-legged friends. Man’s Best Friend already has a fur coat on, and he can’t easily cool off if he gets too hot! Here, a Frederick, MD vet offers some advice on keeping Fido cool and comfy.

Water

The biggest thing here is making sure that your canine companion always has fresh water. You may need to set out more than one water station. If your pooch tends to drain his bowl quickly, consider getting him a fountain or smart waterer. That can help ensure he doesn’t get thirsty while you’re out.

Climate Control

The best way to keep Fido cool? Let him relax in rooms with fans or climate control. You can even point a fan at his bed. Just make sure he can’t knock it over!

Schedule

As the Dog Days of summer approach, those midday hours can become brutally hot. Walk and play with Fido in the mornings or evenings, when it’s (somewhat) cooler.

Shade

Does your pooch have a yard to chase squirrels around in? Your canine pal should always have access to shady areas when he’s outdoors. If Fido doesn’t have a doghouse, you can still make him a cool spot by erecting a shade canopy in your yard. Add a kiddie pool or a pet fountain, and let your furry friend splash and play.

Cooling Vests

Cooling vests can be a great help, particularly for pups with thick coats that are more suited for cold weather. There are different styles you can get. Some you would keep in the freezer, while others you just soak with water. For a quick DIY option, hang a wet bandana around Fido’s neck to cool him off.

Snacks!

We’re pretty sure this one is Fido’s favorite. Go ahead and give your canine buddy a cold snack when it’s really hot out. You can find doggy ice cream in many pet stores or supermarkets. There are also lots of quick and easy treats you can make yourself. Freeze natural peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, and plain yogurt in a Kong. Or, pour sodium-free broth over bits of kibble or crushed-up treats in an ice cube tray. Just stick with safe options.
