There’s a pretty important kitty holiday around the corner. National Cat Day is coming up on October 29^th. While we think our feline pals should be celebrated every day, this is a purrfect chance to show Fluffy some extra attention. A local Frederick, MD vet lists a few ways to get that motor going in this article.

Toys

It’s always adorable watching a playful kitty pouncing on a catnip mouse or chasing after that elusive red dot. Be sure to give Fluffy new toys regularly. You can pick up some really cute Halloween-themed ones at this time of year.

Beds

If there’s one gift that all of our feline patients will appreciate, it’s a comfy new bed. It doesn’t matter if your furball already has one. Or two. Or ten. As far as Fluffy is concerned, there’s just no such thing as too many napping spots.

Kitty Purrniture

Fluffy certainly doesn’t mind ‘borrowing’ our beds, sofas, and armchairs, but she really enjoys having some things that were made just for her. Cat towers are great, as they provide napping spots, scratching posts, jungle gyms, napping spots, and vantage points. Scratching posts and kitty condos are also good choices.

Catnip

Fluffy’s relationship with this interesting member of the mint family is quite interesting. Cats actually have scent receptors in their noses that specifically match catnip scent molecules. And, in case you were wondering, many big cats are also attracted to catnip. For something extra adorable, offer your furball catnip bubbles.

Boxes

Luckily for us, our feline overlords aren’t hard to please. In fact, plain cardboard boxes are one of Fluffy’s favorite things. If you have kids, have them make a box castle.

Treats

Fluffy can be a bit finicky when it comes to treats, but you’re bound to find something she likes. You can experiment with different store-bought treats, or just offer your furball some plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken without the skin, bones or fat. A bit of canned tuna or salmon in water is fine. Just stick with safe options. Ask your vet for more information. 

Helping Other Kitties

National Cat Day is a great chance to pamper your own pet, but it’s also a good time to show homeless kitties some love. Consider helping out a local shelter by volunteering or even fostering. Even sharing posts and information about adoptable local cats can make a difference.
